ANTIPHELLOS (KAS) ANTIQUE CITY

Antiphellos is one of the ancient towns of Kas in Antalya and one of the names of Kas in the Lycian period.

It is definitely understood that the city under Kas is Antiphellos from a bilingual writer who met in Kas. But the older name of Kas is Habesos.

B.C. IV. Antiphellos was a very small settlement in the middle of the century, and it was the port of Phellos which is slightly above. However, during the Hellenistic period, Phellos had declined and Antipellos had developed and came to the forefront. This situation continued in the Roman period, and the city developed from the forests of the cedar trees thanks to the trading and sponge of the cedar trees, and it became a port city of Phellos and became a self-sufficient rich city.

Tomb of the Dancers (IVth Century BC) In the city, the acropolis is seen as a steep wall of the elevation overlooking the Meis Island. However, the north and west sides of these fortifications remained non-sunny. The sea wall remains can also be seen today. To the right of the road leading to the Cukurbag Peninsula in the western part of the city, Antiphellos' theater facing the sea is quite strong.

The most important monument of Kas is a sarcophagus consisting of one block on the Long Bazaar Street, which stands out amongst the boutique shops. It is not known who owns the sarcophagus because the text in the eight-line Lycian language on the sarcophagus can not be read properly in a sunny day. For this reason the people call him the King Sarcophagus.
