SUNKEN (KEKOVA) ANCIENT CITY

Kekova, (Lycian language: Dolichiste) is a small, rocky island near Kaleköy and Ucagiz, near the town of Demre in Antalya province. He often referred to the sources as "Kakava". No one lives on this island, with an area of ​​4.5 km². There is transportation to the island with pensions and cafes on the island.

After the Italian occupation, Turkey and Italy could not be reconciled for a certain period of time, and the island was left to Turkey in 1932.

On the north side there are some wrecks from the ancient city of Dolkisthe, destroyed by earthquakes in the second century. Kekova was rebuilt and developed during the Byzantine period but its development could not continue because of the Arab invasions.

Kekova and its environs were declared a protected area by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry on June 18, 1990. Although all swim and diving have been decided by the government with special permission, in the following years this ban has been lifted for places other than the historic wrecks.
